| Decorating Hints and Tips
- When decorating with accessories, placing them in odd numbered groups is visually pleasing
- Placing one black piece in your room is a great idea. It helps anchor the room and the eye has somewhere to focus
- Floral, striped and geometrical materials can all be used together as long as they are in the same cliour scheme.
- Unsure of a wall? Sample pots of paint are available at most paint stores and are a smart choice.
- Make sure you have the proper amount of task light (e.g. Cooking, reading)
- Painting your baseboards the colour of your wall will make them disappear. A different colour will make them stand out.
- Using one neutral (or variations of one) throughout your home creates flow and continuity. Personalize your style with two or three complimentary colours (accent) brought in with artwork, fabric, accessories…
- Using cooler shades (blue) can make the space feel more open, whereas warmer shades (orange, red) will make the space feel cosier.
- Minimize the use of different flooring materials when possible. The use of too many different types of flooring can create chaos or an uneven look.
- The use of fabrics (curtains, throw cushions) is a creative way to add interest to a room. It is also a good place to start when choosing a colour scheme.
- Using neutral colours on large items such as couches ensures the longevity of that piece. If you decide to change your colour scheme, you can keep the neutral items and change the accent colours.
- The use of fabrics on windows (panels, valances)softens the look of a room. Using the same fabrics throughout adjoining areas ties the look together.
- Using different shades of the same colour creates a monochromatic colour scheme. Bringing in different patterns and textures will create interest.
- If you want to keep your walls light and neutral, cream is a good choice because it adds richness to the room and is a great backdrop for virtually any colour. It also makes a nice trim colour.
